Etching, staining and why the two need different answers
A stain is material that has soaked into the stone and is sitting inside its pores, which is why oil, wine and coffee show as dark marks. Stone is porous, so anything liquid that is left on an unsealed surface will find its way in, and the longer it sits the further it goes. That kind of mark can usually be drawn back out of the stone.
Etching is the opposite problem. Nothing has been added; something has been taken away. An acid has reacted with the calcium in the stone and removed a thin layer of the polished surface, leaving a patch that looks dull or lighter under an angled light. No amount of cleaning replaces that surface, which is why the answer to etching is prevention rather than treatment: keep acidic products off the stone and wipe spills up rather than leaving them.

What is the difference between an etch and a stain on marble?
A stain is something that has soaked into the pores of the stone, so it looks dark and it can usually be drawn back out. An etch is a patch where an acid has dissolved a thin layer of the polished surface, so it looks dull or pale. Cleaning removes stains; it cannot replace an etched surface.
Can I use a general tile cleaner on a marble counter?
It is the most common way marble gets damaged. Many tile cleaners, along with vinegar and household descalers, are acidic, and marble is calcium based, so the two react. One application left to sit is enough to leave a dull mark. Use a product made for stone, or plain water and a soft cloth.
Does natural stone need sealing after it has been cleaned?
Sealing is worth doing on porous stone because it slows down how fast liquids penetrate, which gives you time to wipe a spill before it becomes a stain. It does not make the stone stain proof and it does not protect against etching, since etching is a chemical reaction with the surface itself.
How can I tell whether my stone still has a working seal on it?
Put a few drops of water on it and wait a little. If the water sits on the surface in beads, the seal is still doing its job. If it soaks in and darkens the stone, the seal has worn and the surface is open to staining again. That is a good moment to have it resealed.
Can an oil stain be removed from limestone?
Often, though not always completely. Oil that has soaked into a porous stone is drawn back out rather than scrubbed off, and how much comes out depends on how deep it went and how long it has been there. It is worth attempting on anything recent. An old, deep mark may lighten rather than disappear.
Do you clean stone showers and counters as well as floors?
Yes. Shower surrounds, counters and floors are all natural stone work, and the same rules about acidity apply to each of them. Showers bring the added problem of soap film and hard water deposits building up on the surface, which need lifting without using the acidic products that would normally be reached for.
