Where a pet accident really goes, and what that means for treating it
Think of the carpet as the top of three layers. The face fiber is what shows the mark. The pad beneath it is absorbent by design and holds far more than the carpet does. Under that is the subfloor, which will take up liquid too if enough of it arrives. An accident that looks like a small circle on the surface has usually spread to something considerably wider by the time it reaches the pad, because the liquid moves sideways as it sinks.
So the treated area is deliberately larger than the mark. Working only to the visible edge leaves treated carpet sitting over untreated pad, which is exactly the arrangement that produces a smell that keeps returning.
