Do you clean the rug in my home or take it away?
That depends on the rug. Many area rugs can be cleaned in place, which is the simplest option for you. A valuable hand knotted piece, one with unstable dyes or one that needs a full immersion wash is better handled off the floor and away from the furniture. We will tell you which category yours falls into before anything starts.
How do you know a rug dye will not run?
We test it before cleaning. A damp white cloth pressed against the pile in an inconspicuous spot will show colour transfer if the dye is unstable, and reds and deep blues are the usual offenders. If a dye moves during the test, the method changes. That test is the difference between a clean rug and a ruined one.
Is it safe to clean a wool or silk rug the same way as carpet?
No, and that is the single most common mistake. Wall to wall carpet is usually synthetic and glued to a backing that tolerates a lot of water. Wool is a natural fiber that can felt, and silk marks if it is over wetted. Both need less moisture, gentler chemistry and far more attention while drying.
My rug has a pet accident in it, can that be got out?
Often yes, though it depends how long it has been there and how far it went. Urine passes through the pile into the foundation and then into whatever is underneath, so treating only the top does very little. The rug has to be treated through its full thickness, and an old accident may have already changed the dye.
Do you clean the fringe and the backing as well?
Yes. The fringe is part of the rug foundation rather than a decoration added to the ends, so it is cleaned with the rug and handled carefully because it is the part that frays first. The back is cleaned too, since a great deal of grit sits down against the foundation where nobody ever sees it.
Why is machine cleaning a bad idea for an antique rug?
Because a machine applies the same treatment everywhere and an old rug is not the same everywhere. It has thin places, earlier repairs, areas where the pile has worn low and dyes of different ages that behave differently when wet. Those need somebody looking at the rug and adjusting as they go, not a fixed program.
